A morning swim to the island

A morning swim to the island,
originally uploaded by Stuck in Customs.

My band name is “Monroe” and our most recent album is called “those one loves most.”

I assume the band is just me playing the two chords I know on the guitar and singing show tunes. Maybe this post will inspire me to take guitar lessons this month.

If you’re wondering what I’m talking about go here to play the album game posted by Amanda.

I made one small adjustment to the game. I kept clicking the link for my album cover (which is for a flickr site) until I got a cc licensed picture. Thanks to flickr user Stuck in Customs for using a CC Noncommercial-Attribution-ShareAlike license!

Pink Heart Fairy Princess

Look what I got in the mail today! And I’m willing to bet Eden didn’t even know that my four-year-old Halloween costume was a “pink heart fairy princess” (Thanks, Margie!)

Please excuse the goofy face in the picture. There is really no way to look particularly dignified in a pink-heart crown. Plus, the face was kind of a “thank you” to Miss Eden.

So, does this mean this has to be the rejection crown? Because I’m not inclined to give it up…

I think having Mo here, plus the sunny day finally fixed my bad writing week. Since last evening:

:)

Does Cyd know about this??

Look what we found at Barnes and Noble! It seems to involve the possibility of being a cylon.

More adventures to come!

Maureen is here!

Maureen is visiting. I think I’ve known I could be friends with Mo since we went to the same babysitter in Kindergarten. We used to fight over who got to be the best characters from our TV shows when playing games. We usually wanted to be the same person.

She’s here til Monday and I’m super excited. Our first Atlanta excursion was Parkgrounds, a coffee shop/dog park. It was, as Maureen commented, very Seattle-y and Indie. Lila didn’t like it as much as I thought. Every time I went inside, she just stood at the door and stared after me.

Maureen is reading over my shoulder. So I can’t write embarrassing stories about her from our childhood. Stay tuned for Monday. :)

Two-Tone Cake

Two-Tone Cake,
originally uploaded by kmariwalsh.

This is the pretty cake I made with Aimi. The icing and the vanilla cake were AWESOME. The chocolate layer was a little dry. An, when we’re in Vancouver, I need you to re-teach me your talent of adding chocolate to things with oh-so-much success.

I’ve had a rough writing week–as in, very little writing has happened. After a good, long phone call with Pam tonight, I felt better, but still slackerish. One of the things we talked about was ghosts, and I immediately got scared and woke Lila up to check if there were any ghosts lurking around my house (dogs can sense them, I hear.) She did not find any and requested a pee and a cookie for her trouble.

Anyways, the call reminded me of how many great YA ghosts stories there are (Mary Downing Hahn, anyone?)  Later, procrastinating from writing, I came across one of my first attempts at fiction — circa 1995? It’s a ghost story titled “In a Time Before.” I’m sure to really get the title right, you’d have to read it to yourself in the kind of shaky, deep voice of a monster-movie voice over.

Anyways, it’s action packed. It’s just over three pages, and I use the word “suddenly” nine times, three of which occur in the first paragraph.

Here’s an (horribly embarrassing) excerpt:

Suddenly a groan came from the car and it came to a dead halt. 16-year-old Anne kicked it with her foot. She would have to walk. It was late and dark outside Suddenly a light rain began to fall and lightning cracked like a mischievous child, never deciding where to stay. Anne hesitated and slowly continued down the road. The rain poured harder then suddenly she heard a faint crying in the distance. Was there someone in the road besides her?

Let’s just say that things only get worse from there for poor Anne. Suddenly worse.

Nikki and Harold Cupcake

I firmly believe in the joy of cupcakes for breakfast! Thanks to Nikki and Harold, I had this pretty cupcake from Belly this morning with my coffee. (In my Katie mug!)

All around, a very friendly breakfast. Once again that was NIKKI and HAROLD. There. I mentioned you. :)

Big blog post about making cake, cookies, and bagels to come! (Yes, I’m aware that this blog has become mostly about food. I’m fine with it.)

Tall Bread

Tall Bread,
originally uploaded by kmariwalsh.

…. of funny baking disasters.

I accidentally halved the amount of yeast that this bread needed. (It’s the Amish White Bread again.) Because of that, I was worried it wouldn’t rise, so I cut the salt a little. Also, I put it all in one pan because I figured it wouldn’t rise enough to require two.

i was kind of curious to see what would happen, honestly, because I figured this bread was a miss anyways so I might as well experiment.

Oh goodness, did it rise. It tasted awful. I’ll try again on Wednesday. If anyone has good suggestions for sandwich bread, let me know before then!

Kira Disapproves of…

Friday, February 13th, 2009

…me. I just cannot get anything done on this novel. The characters are just wandering around a creek bed, currently, waiting for something more interesting to do. Really, they’re wading in a creek. I even wrote about them putting on some nice, sensible boots.

Anyways, I’m in the middle of a pretty funny bread disaster with round two of the Amish White Bread. Expect a post as soon as the full compliment of “after” pictures is available. But I had a pretty productive (if creek-focused) writing session with Theresa tonight, and I wanted to put up the word counter again to keep myself honest. The goal is 50,000.

If anyone knows how to make this easier, be sure to speak up!
