Kira Approves
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008If it is possible to have an “unveiling” for a total of four confirmed readers (Hi, Eden, Pam, Caroline, and Dad! *frantic waving*) then this is it. The official unveiling of “Kira Disapproves”.
The blog name comes from Caren’s moniker for a certain face that I have been known to make when I disapprove of something. Eden brought it up as a blog name contender. Shane clinched it with his most recent post-CW ‘08 contest entry, an eponymous story about a failed dinner theatre actress named Kira who makes magical apple fritters.
You kind of have to read it to really appreciate it, but here’s a little snippet. This is from the beginning of the story, when Kira is dealing with a customer who doesn’t want to pay full price for the magical apple fritters, which have been jacked up to eight bucks becasue of their magical-ness:
One guy was chatty and jokey but in a fake way that I didn’t like, and he threw a fit about the apple fritters costing eight dollars. “Nobody has ever charged eight dollars for a donut in the history of the world,” he said. “And I would know.”I think I was supposed to ask him how he would know, but instead I told him there were a variety of other excellent donuts that only cost a dollar, but of course he went ahead and got the apple fritter, so I asked him how he heard about the apple fritters and he lost his jokey attitude and he said I didn’t hear about them anywhere, I always order apple fritters when I see them, and I said look buddy, if people actually liked apple fritters as much as they claim they do the state of the apple fritter would be a lot less bleak.
I felt bad afterward, but that will teach him to be fake.
In another scene, Kira is driving North after the shop that sells the magical donuts closes:
After the third hour of trees I decided to stop for lunch. I was already wondering what the hell I was going to do with myself, which shocked me, not that I was wondering what to do with myself but that I’d thought the word ‘hell’ inside my head . . .
So, as you can see, there might be a few similarities between real Kira and fictional Kira. Like the annoying difficulty with cursing. And the always being hungry.
Anyways, I’m hoping it gets published somewhere so you all can read the rest. I think it’s a really good story, and that’s not just because it’s about me (Well, me if I were magical. Which, honestly, I’m not convinced isn’t true. I’m still expecting someone mysterious to show up on my doorstep and tell me my true destiny.) When it does get published, I plan to quit writing my own stories and live off of the proceeds of “Kira Disapproves” merchandise. Here’s the logo for the t-shirts:

Now, back to the contest. I’m woefully behind. But I’m hoping to at least turn in stories five and six before the bitter end.
