Bio
Hi! I’m Kira Walsh from Atlanta, GA, originally from Burke, VA. I hold a PhD in Culture, History, and Theory from Emory University, where I now work as the Associate Director of Programs in the Department of Chemistry. I have over a decade of experience leading academic program strategy and communications.
My approach in the workplace is deeply influenced by dynamic systems theory – I believe that the value of my work is amplified when it incorporates a diverse range of perspectives, ideas, and experiences. This approach enables me to focus on both the overarching goals and the equally important details that shape workplace systems. As a result, I can deliver meaningful, person-centered work that is both creative and adaptable.
A major focus of my administrative work involves addressing hidden curriculum – unspoken rules and expectations that operate in academic communities – to even the playing field for student success. This has included a re-design of the graduate program handbook for the PhD program in chemistry and the co-founding of Spectrum, a training program designed to build a more fully engaged community in chemistry that includes student, staff, and faculty stakeholders in departmental decision-making.
Outside of work, I serve as volunteer Ombuds for Renegade Theatre Company, a non-profit community theatre in Virginia Highlands. I am also a volunteer writing tutor for Freedom University, an award-winning human rights organization that provides rigorous college preparation classes, college and scholarship application assistance, and social movement leadership training for undocumented students banned from equal access to public higher education in Georgia. I also love to read, write, and explore Atlanta parks with my dogs.
